16 March 2017

From the Acting Principal

Lisa McKeaten

As Zoe mentioned last week, I am Acting Principal while she is on leave. Tracy Freeman is filling in for me for the next 3 weeks. Tracy will be your contact for Years 3 & 4. I will continue to be the contact person for Years 5 & 6.

With only another couple of weeks until Easter holidays, we are all working hard to complete units of work and also to celebrate our great achievements so far this year.

At this stage of the term we often see children with some illness, due to being a bit overtired and also change of seasons. If your child is sick and possibly contagious, it would be advisable to keep them at home. I understand that sometimes it is difficult to tell in the mornings how they will be during the day, but if they are really unwell please give them time at home to recover.

Parent Teacher Interviews – Week 9

Next week teachers will be conducting Parent teacher interviews. This is a great opportunity to celebrate your child’s achievements so far this term (including academic as well as social & emotional). It is also a good time to have a discussion with your child’s teacher about any concerns which you or the teacher may have as well as a plan to address these concerns. There may be information that is relevant to share. Some information about their family, interests, motivations etc. are often insightful to us, so we can better understand them as learners. It is also an opportunity for teachers and parents alike to ask questions. I suggest you come prepared with any questions you may have.

For example:

“How can I help my child at home?”
“Are there any concerns that need addressing?”
“How can I support what is happening at school? Eg. Common language, consistent messages etc.

By the end of each interview I have asked the teachers to end with a goal that together, the teacher, you and the student can work on. This may be an academic, social or emotional goal. This may also be linked to our Learning Assets or our Inquiry focus in the school.

Parent Information Sessions Term 2

In Term 2 we will be having several Parent information sessions. We will have a repeat of our sessions last year about “Curiosity and Powerful Learning” (Week 2), for any parents who are new or missed the ones last year. We will be offering new sessions for Term 2: 1) Inquiry and Learning Assets (Week 4) and 2) Higher Order Questions (Week 6). Details about dates and times will be in next week’s newsletter.

This Friday is a big Day – “National Ride 2 School Day”. There is a ‘Decorate your helmet” competition and double stamping.

Enhancement program

Just a reminder that Expression of Interest forms for Enhancement 2018 (Years 2 or 4) are due into the office by Wednesday 29th March. All entries into the UNSW competitions are due this Friday 17th March. Any students applying for the Enhancement program need to participate in the English, Maths & Science competitions.

Let’s ‘stand together’ against bullying and violence!

Our school is proud to say ‘Bullying. No Way!’ On Friday 17 March we will stand united with schools across Australia for the 2017 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

Taking a stand together will deliver a powerful message that bullying and violence is never okay.

We strongly encourage parents and carers to have open and honest conversations with their children about bullying in all forms.

To get the discussion started with helpful information and tips visit the Bullying. No Way! website.

ANZAC Day

Finally, there have been some changes to ANZAC day services in our local area this year. There will be a march at Graceville but it will run from the Train station in Appel Street along to the Croquet Club through to Memorial Park.

Unfortunately the number of volunteers required to run so many services on ANZAC day are also dwindling. To ensure our Graceville service is still able to take place, Zoe has agreed that the school will take on some extra responsibility to help the RSL on ANZAC day itself. I will be calling for volunteers early next term to help set up and pack up chairs, shade structures etc. for our community ANZAC service. Any support you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Study Tour Proposal – From Minzu Elementary School in Taiwan to Graceville State School

We still need more school families to volunteer to host a student – please read below.

Our school has again been approached by Education Queensland International to host a Study Tour of approx. 20 students from Taiwan beginning July 11 for 2 weeks. Graceville has hosted a few study tours now from Taiwan in past years. This year we will host Minzu School’s visit and do a return visit by Graceville to this same school in September this year. We have 22 students who will be participating in this outbound study tour.

All experiences have been wonderful for our staff and students as two very different cultures met and while our students had greater exposure to native Mandarin speakers the students from Taiwan were immersed in the English language daily here in Australia.

In order for Graceville to be able to host these students, we need to provide homestay accommodation. You may have more than one student if desired with most students preferring to stay with another student.

A homestay family must provide:

  • A bed – own bedroom is desirable but not necessary
  • All meals – send lunch each day, if your child has tuckshop, then provide homestay student with tuckshop also
  • Travel to and from school

Each Saturday, the students will go on an all-day excursion so must also be dropped at school at 9:00am and picked up at approximately 5pm (this is negotiable if your family was to go away for the weekend).

We cannot undertake this study tour without the support of our school families. Students from Taiwan will be 10-12 years of age. School families with younger children can be a homestay family as all students will be assigned a school buddy as well. Could you please indicate on the form attached if you would be interested in hosting a student for this upcoming study tour. Please return the form to the admin office ASAP or email me at mhass10@eq.edu.au. I will arrange an information session for all families who indicate interest to go through in detail what would be involved. Families who host a student will be funded $200 to assist in covering the costs in providing for a visiting student.

There are many benefits in participating in a study tour including:

  • Our students get to experience other cultures
  • Friendships are formed which last for many years
  • Learning is enriched for all students
  • Students enjoy sharing their daily lives with students from another country
  • The school benefits financially.

If there are any questions that you may have about being a homestay family please email me or call the office to speak with me.

I look forward to hearing from interested families.

Junior Assemblies

Parents and care givers are invited to join us for Junior Assemblies which will be held every second Tuesday afternoon from 2.15 in the hall.

Prep Easter Hat Parade

From the Acting Deputy Principal

Tracy Freeman

I would like to take this occasion to introduce myself. My name is Tracy Freeman and I have the privilege of working as the Master Teacher at Graceville. My work over the last two years has been predominantly based in all things Reading. It is wonderful to see students developing a love for reading, being able to decode texts, as well exhibiting the skills necessary to identify and use comprehension strategies. This year my focus will be on Spelling and Framing Higher Order Questions. Later next term I hope to meet many of you when we have a parent information session based around Framing Higher Order Questions.

Over the next three weeks I have the pleasure of working in the Deputy Principal role while Mrs McKeaten is taking the role of Principal during Mrs Smith’s long service leave. This week I have had the opportunity to visit the Year 3 classrooms and see some of the Learning Assets in action. By the end of the week I hope to have visited all Year 4 classrooms, so if you see me in my travels please don’t hesitate to say hello.

NAPLAN testing – Term 2

On Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known.

Skills that will be tested include: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

These tests are done here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.

It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia.

NAPLAN cannot be studied for and students are not expected to do so. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is just a routine part of their school program, and to urge them to do the best they can on the day.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing. Please ensure that if you have a child in Years 3 or 5 that they are in attendance during that week in May. Please avoid booking holidays or appointments during those days. If you can’t avoid those days e.g. specialist appointment, please try to make it in the afternoon. All testing will be completed by 12.45 on those days.

Later in the year we will send you an individual student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and monitor how your child is progressing.

More information is available on the NAP website.

If you have any concerns, please contact the class teacher or myself.

GRACEVILLE STATE SCHOOL READERS’ CUP COMPETITION 2017

This term Year 5 & 6 students will participate in the annual GSS READERS CUP. Teams will compete against each other in the Readers Cup competition on THURSDAY 30 MARCH at 9.00 am in the HALL.

Readers’ Cup is a competition that promotes the reading of books and rewards students who do well at reading. Just as good sports people receive rewards, then good readers will receive accolades and prizes for competing at reading.

Teams have already been formed and students are currently reading the SIX selected stories (Specky Magee - Felice Arena; Dragon Dawn - Carole Wilkinson; Hatchet - Gary Paulson; Spaghetti Pig Out (from ‘Uncanny’) - Paul Jennings (short story); Little Squirt (from ‘Unmentionable’) - Paul Jennings (short story); Amy and Louis - Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood (picture book).

Points are scored on the day by answering rounds of questions on each book as well as answering rounds of general knowledge questions on reading and books.

Families are asked to encourage their children to read the required stories books and actively support their team!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

We are hoping to get Book Club back up and running again at Graceville this year. However, to do this we need some volunteers who would be able to co-ordinate this program. Book Club is usually run once a term, and there is plenty of training and guidance to help you organise this event each term.

If you are able to help out and would like to learn the ropes please contact the school library.

CONTACT CLUB VOLUNTEERS

A great big thanks to those who helped out at the last Contact Club. We had a large turn out, and now have a heap of brand new library books to add to the collection. The children are so excited! Teachers were also appreciative of the new resources that they are now able to access and use in their classrooms.

There are always books to cover so if you are able to come in for the next club meeting that would be fabulous. Mark your calendar - Wednesday 29th March.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL:

TACO TUESDAY!

(Travel Actively Coming-to-school On)

Thanks to our Crossing Supervisors

TACO Tuesday promotes active travel within our school community. Each day we are lucky enough to have our crossing supervisors, at drop off and pick up time, assist the students and families to safely cross (a very busy) Acacia Avenue. Stop for a moment and imagine how comfortable you would feel to have your child cross the road unsupervised? Imagine all the cars in the pickup zone and the lack of visibility….would you feel comfortable and confident to let your loved one cross the road alone?

Unfortunately, on regular basis our supervisors face criticism and negativity from parents and caregivers who are asked to ‘do the right thing”!

What can you do to help?

  • Do not park any part of your vehicle over the crossing zone – this enables the supervisors to see clearly and assist your children to cross safely. If you are asked to move please do so.
  • Do not park your car in the pickup zone – check the signage for the times where parking is permitted
  • Stay in your vehicle while in the two minute pick up zone during specified times
  • Follow the speed limit – 40 kmph 7am-9am and 2pm-4pm school days
  • Check for road signs and yellow lines

Our crossing supervisors, should under no circumstances feel unsafe themselves when undertaking their role and asking others to adhere to signage and markings.

Please take the time to say “thanks” to our fantastic duo that assist many of the students each day to get to school safely.

Using the school Pick-Up-Zone

We recognize that it isn’t always possible to actively travel to school and that each day many students are collected from the Pick-Up-Zones on Park Road and Acacia Avenue. Last year in response to parent concerns and feedback we made a number of changes to how the pick-up zone is to be used, and these changes have been rolled out on Acacia Avenue and we will be rolling them out on Park Road this year.

These RULES are designed to:

  • Keep our students and families safe and reduce any accidents or incidents
  • Help with the flow of traffic around the school at peak times
  • Assist our wonderful crossing supervisors to help them do their jobs safely which keeps our community safe

With this in mind we all need to “do the right thing” for this to work – We understand that sometimes we are in a hurry or get frustrated, however, not adhering to signage or road markings puts everyone at risk. We also understand that caregivers, grandparents, and friends also use the pick-up zones. If you can take the time to familiarise yourself with the procedures, and pass the information on to any family members, this will assist us to get you moving quickly and safely on your way.

If you have a few spare hours a month to help us run this fantastic program we are looking for volunteers to join our Active Travel Committee. We meet once a term and plan one key event a term. Parents run our committee with three staff members so we are in much need of additional support. Can you help? Please contact Jo Richards at sajrichards@iinet.net.au for more information. Alternatively please join us, Thursday 20th April at 10:45am in the waratah room– details will be available in the school newsletter.

SPELLATHON

Spellathon Test Day was Tuesday of this week. Thank you to the children for learning their words and trying their best. Thanks also to the teachers for supporting the Spellathon and for incorporating the Spellathon test into their busy schedules. Everyone’s efforts to help the school are greatly appreciated.

Each child’s sponsorship envelope should have been sent home again this week so the children can collect their sponsorship money from their sponsors. To be eligible for prizes the sponsorship forms and all money raised are due back to the School office by 3pm on Tuesday 28 March. If your child forgot to bring in their form for test day, please get them to bring the form in soon for the teacher to write the child’s number of words/ tasks that they got correct on the top. If you cannot find your envelope or form, please find a copy linked to this newsletter.

Don’t forget there are great prizes in each year level. Prizes will be based on sponsorship collected and also every child who spells all their words correctly will be entered into an exciting prize draw where they could win one of two fun prizes in each year level (see your information letter for prize details). As well as these individual prizes, there will be whole class prizes. Every child in the class that raises the most money in each year level will receive a small prize. No matter how small a contribution your child makes it will be helping to make the 2017 Spellathon a great success.

This year the funds raised will go directly to support our Inquiry learning approach in either Science, Humanities and the Social Sciences or the Learning Assets.

Our sponsors for 2017 are Peter May and Brad Robson from Place Real Estate, Oxley Rd Discount Drug Store and Superior Fruit & Wendy’s Kitchen.

If you need help buying or selling your home, Peter & Brad from Place are the ones to help you. Please contact Peter on 0409543546 or Brad on 0414773437.

For all your pharmacy needs go to Oxley Road Discount Drug Store where you get more than just low prices. They are located right next to the Post Office in Graceville.

Superior Fruit & Wendy’s Kitchen is our local family-run business which provides Brisbane with the widest range of the BEST fruit, vegetables, small goods, cheeses, vinegars, oils, ice creams and more. Bank Road, Graceville.

We thank our sponsors for their support of our school and ask that you support them with your business.

Active School Travel is up and running again and students have been encouraged to be active in getting to and from school. Walking, riding scooters, bikes or skateboards, car-pooling or driving but parking a little way from school are all good ways to be actively travelling to school. Of course, a very important part of the Active School Travel is to travel safely, observing road rules and crossing signs. The traffic in this area continues to build, so anything we can do to lessen traffic around the school and make our roads safer for our children, is well worth the effort.

In the next couple of weeks we will highlight a couple of major calendar events, namely the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and Harmony Day. These days address some important issues in our society and raising student awareness and understanding of why these days are on our calendar, can be powerful in “turning things around”. Positive messages of support, safety, acceptance, inclusion and standing up for what’s right can inspire all of us, including our young people. Events like these also give our students a voice and opportunities to become a greater part of a wider community.

The Interschool sport competition continues this Friday and I have reports of exciting games, dramatic finishes, wonderful sportsmanship and even a victory or two. I hope our students enjoy this experience, learn some important life lessons and develop their skills. I also hope students truly appreciate the efforts of Mr Daunt and the other teachers who are involved in the sports program. I would also like to acknowledge the parents who are able to attend games and support our students. I know it means a great deal to our students.

Recent Snapshot-

swim lesson supervision, hall games at first break, set up and operate sound system for senior choir rehearsal, reading groups, sound system and hall set up for assemblies, before school duty, referee soccer at 2nd break, wet weather activities in hall, front gate duty, cook staff BBQ lunch, girls’ soccer training, Interschool sport.

Have a wonderful week!
