9 June 2016

From the Principal

Zoe Smith

Hello,

Oh what a night! The Trivia Night went off with a bang on Saturday night. The costumes and table effects were outstanding! At times it was hard to tell it was a Trivia Night. There was singing, some dancing and games. I think the 80’s theme was dear to many participants’ hearts! The teachers and I enjoyed working behind the bar and getting to know parents in a much more relaxed way. I would like thank Juanita Bennet and her team for organising a great night, with special thanks to Bernie McKeaten for writing the trivia questions and Richard Newsome for stepping in at the last minute to host the night!

The teachers still have one more week to finalise Report Cards which will go to school leaders for proof reading on Monday 13 June and back to teachers by Monday 20 June for final edits. Report Cards will be printed and handed to students in a sealed envelope on 22 June.

A few weeks ago, May 14th -22nd was School Chaplaincy week. During Chaplaincy week it is important for us to remind families of how our Chaplaincy service operates. Chaplaincy at Graceville State School was instigated in 2007 by parent request. The concept was welcomed by the Principal and staff, endorsed by the P&C and supported by local churches, businesses and the community.

A little known fact is that our Chaplaincy service was the first full-time primary school chaplaincy service in Queensland’s State School system! In 2014, the Federal Government announced a commitment to a further four years of funding, 2015 – 2018. The Federal Government funding does not equate to a 5 day a week Chaplaincy service and so the P&C, supportive of a full time Chaplain remaining in the school, chose to donate funds towards continuation of the 5 day a week service. Our school Chaplaincy committee which consists of parents, teachers and wider community members, also hold a few fundraising events each year aimed at both raising awareness of Chaplaincy in the school and helping to fund the 5 day a week service.

John Erichsen, our Chappy, has been with us for 9 ½ years and is a safe person for young people to connect with at school. John is committed to encouraging students in the development of life skills and coping strategies that will enable them to make good choices and maximise their school and life experiences. John’s goal is to build strong relationships with students through active participation in their world. He provides a listening ear, caring presence, and a message of hope. You can help support Chaplaincy at Graceville by supporting fundraising events such as our annual Lap-a-thon which is being held on Tuesday 21st June this term. You can also make a donation to Chaplaincy at Graceville State School. A form has been attached to this newsletter for families interested in making a donation to Chaplaincy at Graceville. I would like to thank John, our Chappy, for the care and consideration he shows to all members our school community. We are lucky to have an experienced Chaplain who injects himself into the life of the school and is always there to lend a helping hand or a listening ear when it is needed! A belated Happy Chappy week John! Thanks for all that you do in our great school!

As you may have heard, the school is celebrating NAIDOC Week on 23 June. The school will host a full day of events and activities on the 23rd which will start with a full school assembly. The last day of the school term is a free dress day to support World Environment Day. Although the date has passed, the student council voted to hold a ‘Wild Onesies’ Day. A gold coin donation is required if students come in free dress.

Finally, I would like to welcome Mrs Ria Garrard back to the school after her maternity leave. Mrs Garrard will be working in a teaching partnership with Mrs Carolyn Brough in 2BG for the remainder of the year.

Have a great week.

QSchools App for Graceville – have you downloaded the app yet and marked Graceville SS as a favourite?

I have already sent out two notifications of changes to school events and news…….

The QSchools app is a convenient way to receive up-to-the minute information from Queensland state schools. We have decided to trial the use of this app for parents and families to get up to the minute information about many facets of school life at Graceville. The App is free to download and you can then identify Graceville as your favourite school where you will find located contact details, news feed, calendar events, links to school newsletters, fete newsletters, information about the tuckshop and uniform shop etc. We will also use the app as a means of sending out important school messages, notifications of upcoming events and emergency alerts and important updates. To receive school notifications you must permit ‘push notifications’ to come through on the settings on your phone.

The QSchools flyer is attached

How do I download the QSchools app?

To download the app visit the application store for your device:

If you have any feedback around the use of the QSchool app or questions, please send me an email at mhass10@eq.edu.au

Wild Onsie Friday

To celebrate World Environment Day we are having a “Wild Onsie Friday” on the last day of this term – Friday 24th June. All members of the school community are encouraged to wear a Onsie (but bring a uniform as well). The Student Council will collect a gold coin donation from students and staff to fundraise for Endangered Species. www.wildonesieweek.com

WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO?

Funds raised during Wild Onesie Week 2016 will help WWF continue our work in protecting our most precious species and places.

It’s hard to imagine a world without rock-wallabies, pandas, tigers, turtles or orang-utans in the wild. Sadly, that’s the way these precious endangered animals are heading.

In 2016, we are shining the spotlight on a vulnerable Australian native species - the green turtle. Green turtles are a remarkable species that have inhabited our planet for more than 120 million years – longer than any human has. However, sadly, human activity over the last 200 hundred years has caused a catastrophic decline in many populations across Asia Pacific. If you’ve ever dived or snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef and been lucky enough to spot a turtle, it was most likely a green turtle. Our precious Great Barrier Reef is a vital ecosystem for green turtles, with large populations living, feeding and nesting there.

Donations towards Wild Onesie Week will support WWF’s essential conservation work – protecting the habitat and ensuring the survival of endangered species locally and globally. This includes working with our partners to understand the sources and impacts of pollution on the Great Barrier Reef and our precious green turtles. The more we understand, the better we can protect our iconic marine life and ensure their survival for future generations.

Important Safety Reminder:

2 minute Drop off/pick up zones – how they work:

There is a drop off & pick up zone outside the front gates of the school on Acacia Street. The design of this drop off area is as follows:

  • Only the top three cars, i.e. those closest to the front gates are to stop and drop off children. The rest must wait until these cars have moved on, then move up to the front of the zone and stop, then your children will be allowed to get into the cars.
  • The driver is not to leave the car at any time while in this line. Helping get bags out of the boot is OK – but having a conversation with other drivers, going into the office or inside the school gates is not acceptable and only disrupts the flow of traffic.
  • Discourage your children from entering or exiting on the road side of the car – the road is too narrow!
  • The sign says 2mins, however, please be mindful of all other parents and carers in this line and move on as fast as possible.
  • It is not acceptable to move up on the right hand side past waiting cars with your indicator on to park up ahead of those waiting cars. This causes double parking, lack of sight for leaving cars and a dangerous situation for both drivers and children exiting cars. Please be patient and wait your turn.
  • When pulling out after dropping off – wait for the car in front to move forward first. This way we don’t have cars jutting out and causing congestion.
  • Please do not park over the safe crossing area at any time.
  • There are staff on duty to help the process run smoothly. Please don’t encourage your children to disregard their instructions e.g. jumping the fence to enter your car.

There is also a 2 minute drop off zone at the back of the school near the prep buildings.

  • This area is not a parking bay. If you want to park & get out of the car to go into the school – park in another location!
  • You are not permitted to turn right after coming out of this drop off area. It is not safe for those walking to school and using the traffic island.
  • As above - the driver is not to leave the car at any time while in this line. Helping get bags out of the boot is OK – but having a conversation with other drivers is not acceptable
  • Please move on as soon as possible.

Important Cyber Safety tips

The department has recently been alerted to random users contacting children using the social media app ‘Instagram’.

The following tips are provided to parents on how their children can avoid random contact on social media:

  1. Know which social media your child uses.
  2. Discuss with your child who their online friends and followers are. Only be friends with people online who you know and trust in the real world.
  3. Take a proactive approach and establish clear and agreed rules for your child’s internet use.

Trivia Night

Another Trivia Night has come and gone – and what a night it was!!

With a record number of tables booked – the signs were there that it was going to be a fun night and those who attended were not disappointed. Many memories of the 1980’s were flashbacked with tables such as Ghostbusters (Who won Best Dressed), Live Aid, Top Guns, Monkey Magic, Kiss, many different computer game characters, Commonwealth Games Kangaroos, and so many more...

A great many local businesses also donated some great prizes for the night and huge thanks goes out to them as well, especially our major sponsors – Ray White Sherwood, Belle Property Graceville and Place Real Estate Graceville. A complete list of all our sponsors for the night is attached.

A big thank you must also go out to the team – Lisa & Bernie McKeaten (a fountain of trivia), Michael Willimott (bartender),Pauline Sinclair (sponsorship guru), Zoe Smith and all of the staff who helped on the bar, Chappy for his AV skills, and Chris Hansen, Kieran Olsen and Damien Love for their help in setting up the hall. Thanks must also go out to Richard Newsome, who stepped in at the last minute to be MC, when sickness hit.

All I can say is bring on next year...

Music News

Naomi Lindh

Congratulations to our Senior Concert Band and Senior Strings who performed at the Fanfare festival on Tuesday 30 May. This was a fabulous opportunity for our students to perform, receive feedback on their performances and listen to students from other schools perform in bands and orchestras. Our Senior Strings were awarded a Gold and our Senior Concert Band a Silver. I would like to thank our dedicated music students and staff for their hard work preparing for the performance and families for supporting their involvement and attendance at rehearsal, as well as Chappy who attended this event as an additional supervisor.

17 June - Choir Workshop/Incursion (to be held at school with a guest conductor and school choir conductors)

All choir students will be involved and performing in a concert in the afternoon at 2:15pm. The choir incursion does not require a permission slip as it is to be held in the school grounds. Students need to bring their lunch and a drink as usual. They are able to order tuckshop but it will be most appropriate for them to collect it from their classroom a couple of minutes before first break. A drink bottle of water is essential as well as warm clothes as some time will be spent in the hall which is not heated. Students are requested to wear school uniform.

The guest conductor for the choir incursion/workshop is Kate Thompson, an experienced choir conductor and music teacher. She has a passion for music education and community singing. Kate has sung with and conducted numerous choirs both in Australia and Canada and currently conducts the Birralee Piccolos and is an assistant conductor for the Birralee Blokes and the Queensland Kodaly Choir. She is a frequent guest clinician at conferences and workshops both locally and interstate and runs weekly methodology and musicians classes for the Pathways to Music program. Having taught in Education Queensland and independent schools, Kate is currently a primary classroom and choral specialist at Ambrose Treacy College.

The concert will be for staff and students as well as families and members of the school community. Ms Julie West and I are very much looking forward to this exciting event which is a trial for our school and we may consider continuing this biennially.

23 June - NAIDOC Day assembly (in the morning) - Year 2/3 Choir performing (one song)

Please inform your child's conductor if they are unwell or unable to attend a rehearsal.

Lapathon

It’s LAP-A-THON time! Lap-a-thon is a fundraising event designed to be a fun activity for our children.

This week the LAP-A-THON 2016 sponsorship forms and information note have been given to the children to take home. If your family has not received the Lap-a-thon information please check the bottom of their school bags. The documents are also linked to this newsletter.

On Tuesday June 21st in the last week of this term the Chaplaincy Lap-a-thon will take place. This is both a fun activity for students and one of the Chaplaincy fundraisers, held during the year. Financing a fulltime chaplaincy service is no small task but the consistency of service to students is a great benefit. With the goal of continuing to provide a fulltime chaplaincy service at Graceville State School, families are encouraged to support the Lap-a-thon.

For families new to the school, the activity is as follows – all students run, for 20 - 25 minutes, in their year levels around a course marked around the perimeter of the school oval (approx. 220m).

All students participate in the activity and families wishing to support chaplaincy financially can do so by sponsoring students a total amount or an amount per lap.

There are year level prizes for the most laps by an individual boy and girl. There are also class prizes for the class which completes the highest number of laps per participant. There is also a fundraising prize for both Junior and Senior age groups. The Lap-a-thon fundraising prize goes to the student who finds the highest number of sponsors.

Students are encouraged to embrace the activity. Parents are welcome to come along on the day and watch the students run, jog, skip and walk their way around the course. Music will be playing to create a fun atmosphere with the focus being on students enjoying participating in the activity.

Popcorn will be sold for $1on the oval at first break and Ice blocks will be sold at second break at the tuckshop. A coffee van should be on site the entire day. The support from parents for this event in recent years has been staggering and highlights the value seen in the chaplaincy service by many school families. It also highlights how generous and supportive our school community is when investing in the lives of our students.

Chappy’s Chat

John Erichsen

To use the works of the well-known wordsmiths, Racey, the Trivia night was “such a night to have a party”. Back to the 80’s was an amazing celebration of many childhood memories returning to life in a big way. Costumes and table decorations were incredible and I don’t recall a trivia night with such crowd participation. It was a fantastic night and the school community sends a huge thank you for an awesome job done by all those involved in organising the event. Next year will have its work cut out to match Saturday night.

After the rain and with the chilly winds roaring, it seems fitting to mention that “Winter is Coming”. Mornings are cold but if the breeze drops, the days are warm so it’s an opportunity for school jumpers to be taken off and go wandering. Please ensure that students’ names are on their jumpers so any lost items will end up in the lost property area. The parents who volunteer time to tidy up the lost property and return identified items to their respective classes do a brilliant job and names on items makes their job far easier.

Pirates, swords and buried treasure will the order of the day on Thursday as our Preps enjoy life on the High Seas. Pirates’ day is such an exciting day for our younger students and also for the staff involved. The focus might be more on play then plunder but our prep students will certainly put the “jolly” into Jolly Roger this year.

Less than two weeks to go until the Chaplaincy Lapathon fundraiser and posters will be appearing soon around the school, as will the running lines. The program for Tuesday June 21 will be in next week’s newsletter so families and friends can know what time year levels are participating and be there to watch. A coffee van will be on site in the morning session, so caffeine requirements can be adequately addressed. It should be a great day and a good opportunity for all students to have some healthy fun with their friends.

Have a fantastic week!

Active School Travel

TACO TUESDAY!
(Travel Actively Coming-to-school On)

You’ve probably heard of ‘Park and Ride’, but what about ‘Park and Stride’?

Active School Travel encourages students to walk, cycle, scoot, carpool and catch public transport to and from school, but some parents still need to drive their children to school as part of their journey to work or other activities. Alternatively, you may live a long distance from the school and can’t actively travel all the way from home.

Even though you might need to drive your children to school, you can still make a difference to the traffic congestion around our school, and increase your child’s activity levels, by Parking & Striding to school.

Use the Active Travel map to find your Park & Stride starting point. Make sure it’s at least a 10 minute walk from the school and your child will receive a stamp in their AST passport on their active travel day.

So don’t miss out on TACO Tuesdays, try the Park & Stride to feel alive!

Fete Competition

The school fete committee has generously donated some prizes to Active Travel, which is great news for all those students out there who are active on TACO Tuesday! Active travel can be any of the following:

  • Walking to school
  • Park and stride – parking the car in the designate “park and stride” zones and walking a short distance to school
  • Riding your bike or scooter to school
  • Carpooling – arriving at school by car with some of your friends
  • Public transport

Being dropped off at the front gate does NOT qualify as “active travel”.

In weeks 1-6 of Term 3 (12th July – 16th August) you will have the opportunity to collect an entry each week when you have your active travel passport stamped at the designated stamping stations. All you need to do is fill out your entry form and put it into the entry box (locations to be confirmed). Entries must be received by 19th August @ 3pm to go in the draw.

Active School Travel Fete competition 2016

Name………………………………………………

Class………………………………………………

So if you travel every week you have the opportunity to have six entries in the running for the prizes. So get active!!!!

There will be one (1) ride band per year level to be given away. If you’re lucky enough to win and have already purchased your ride band, don’t worry we will organise a refund for you.

To win the free toss at the lob-o-choc get together with your class and get as many of your class mates to enter as possible. It’s simple, the class with the most entries will win!

Did you know that the Graceville Bike Company proudly supports the GSS Active Travel Program? They are offering the following to the families of Graceville State School:

  • 15% off all kids’ accessories (not including bikes)
  • 5% off all kids’ bikes

If you have a few spare hours a month to help us run this fantastic program we are looking for volunteers to join our Active Travel Committee. Our next meeting will be on 28th July @ 10:45am in the Waratah Room. Please contact Jo Richards at sajrichards@iinet.net.au for more information.

REGIONAL READER’S CUP COMPETITIONS 2016

On Monday 6th June, the Corinda Teacher Librarian Network held their annual Readers Cup Competition. This year it once again took place at Brookfield State School. The students were required to read five books in preparation for the competition and on the day answered five rounds of challenging questions about each of these books. The scores were very close throughout the entire competition, resulting in four teams (including Graceville) going to a tie breaker for first place.

Graceville State School competed at an outstanding level ending up in THIRD place. This fabulous team was made up of four very enthusiastic and energetic boys: Josh, Sebastian, Pragun and Ryleigh.

Congratulations team – we are very proud of you and thank you for representing our school in this excellent reading competition!

TRIVIA NIGHT

OMG what a night! Thank you to all who attended the Trivia Night on Saturday. Luckily we were through the worst of the ‘weather event’ and the night went ahead as planned. “Back to the 80s” was obviously a perfect theme and the effort the different tables went to was truly stunning. The night was full of fun, trivia and importantly a great community spirit. A perfect example of the Graceville community spirit was our MC for the evening, Richard Newsome. Richard was called at around 3.00pm Saturday afternoon as unfortunately our planned MC fell ill. Richard left the school last year, but was happy step up, take the microphone and make the night for us. Thank you Richard.

Don’t put your 80s gear away just yet, as was announced at the trivia night, get ready for ………………………

She has graciously accepted our invitation to present recent research at our meeting. The research pertains to both children and adults.

Please see the details below for our next West Brisbane Region Asperger Support Group Meeting:

Date: Thursday June 16
Time: 7pm - 9pm (Please arrive ready to start the meeting at 7pm)

Speaker: Dr Mel Fowler
Topic: "Biomedical approach to treating metabolic issues associated with ASD symptoms"

About the Speaker:
Dr Melissa Fowler is a Brisbane GP who has a son with Aspergers. Having seen significant improvements in him since treating him with a biomedical approach she has undertaken further training in this area and is inspired to share this knowledge with other parents who are wanting another option for their children.

We look forward to seeing you.
