2 June 2016
From the Principal
Zoe Smith
Hello,
We are now entering the last three weeks of a very long term! The teachers are deep into report card writing and I greatly appreciate the space and support our families are providing for our teachers during this busy time. Report cards go home on 22 June.
We had a fantastic day with Kath Murdoch from Melbourne University on Saturday. Kath was an engaging presenter and facilitator who opened our eyes to what an Inquiry approach to teaching and learning could look like in a school. As a staff, we now have a great platform to construct the key characteristics and dispositions of both Inquiry teachers and learners at Graceville State School. We also became aware of how important a deep knowledge and understanding of the big concepts from the Australian Curriculum are in order to be a successful Inquiry teacher. We feel we have a fantastic platform to build on after our initial time with Kath. A strong emphasis was also placed on the importance of parents encouraging their children to be active inquirers. Kath said parents, despite their best intentions, and due to time constraints, often get in the way of children exploring and learning for themselves. Kath suggests that parents let children try and do things for themselves while learning, watch and see what they can and cannot do, then teach them what you can see they do not know. After that hop out of their way again and let them give it a go, encouraging and supporting where necessary, not jumping in too early in order to let them make mistakes. It is from our mistakes we learn the most! Hard in a busy and time poor world but stifling for a child seeking to be an active inquirer, keen to make sense of their own world.
The Trivia night is this Saturday! It sounds like it will be a big night with 28 tables of players! A few teachers and I will be manning the bar in order for you all to enjoy yourselves. We are very appreciative of your support this year!
I will be out of the school next Tuesday and Wednesday attending a leading change seminar. As you know, our school is now embarking on our Curiosity and Powerful Learning journey which is exciting and throwing up all sorts of new and interesting things for us to lead and manage. I thought it timely to update my skills in this area to ensure our school leadership is as prepared as possible for the change we will transition through over the next few years. Mrs McKeaten and Ms Hass will both be in the school and available for you to contact if you need any help.
Finally, don’t forget the Lap-a-thon is coming soon! The Lap-a-thon is being held in the last week of the school term. All children will receive a form to collect sponsors by the end of this week.
I hope you have a great week.

QSchools App for Graceville
The QSchools app is a convenient way to receive up-to-the minute information from Queensland state schools. We have decided to trial the use of this app for parents and families to get up to the minute information about many facets of school life at Graceville. The App is free to download and you can then identify Graceville as your favourite school where you will find located contact details, news feed, calendar events, links to school newsletters, fete newsletters, information about the tuckshop and uniform shop etc. We will also use the app as a means of sending out important school messages, notifications of upcoming events and emergency alerts and important updates. To receive school notifications you must permit ‘push notifications’ to come through on the settings on your phone.

Free vision checks for Prep Students at school
We have been approached by Children’s Health Qld Hospital and Health Service to take part in a research project where data is collected around participating students and a screening of their vision is carried out. Participation is voluntary and if you would like your child to participate which would mean 15mins out of class supervised by a teacher aide to undertake the screener with feedback given to parents if there are any concerns then please complete the document in the envelope sent home this week. These envelopes must be returned to school by Thursday June 9 prior to the screening to take place on Friday June 17.
The Buddy Program at Graceville
At our full school assembly on Thursday I highlighted the important work that our teachers and students across the school do within our buddy program. Our younger students are supported by older students to feel comfortable in a big school environment and in their learning both within and outside the classroom. Our older students do feel a responsibility to be good role models for younger students and enjoy their interactions with the younger students.
Prep S and 3/4BC share weekly in a variety of experiences which includes cooking. Here are some photos showing the learning and fun that buddy experiences provide.

Date Claimer: Prep Information Evening - Wednesday July 27 at 7pm.
Graceville State School recognises as its prime obligation the provision of access to an appropriate educational service for students resident within this community as defined by its local catchment area.
Please visit the following link which details our school enrolment management plan and also provides a link to the catchment area for Graceville State School:

This site also outlines the process for placing your child’s name on our waiting list if you reside outside of our catchment area.
Study Tour 2016 – From Future Heir School in Taiwan to Graceville State School
Thank you to the parents who have come forward to express interest in hosting a student from Taiwan during our upcoming Study Tour. It’s not too late to put up your hand if interested in hosting a student! The success of a study tour to our school is very dependent upon this kind of support and we are looking to host approx. 20 students during this time
Please return the expression of interest form to the admin office ASAP or email me at mhass10@eq.edu.au
Fine Motor Program

Over the past four weeks Student Services have run another successful fine motor program. Mrs Malcolm and Mrs Lambkin would like to thank all students involved for their persistence, determination and positivity.
I would like to thank Mrs Lambkin and Mrs Malcolm along with some students, teacher aides and parent volunteers who supported this program.

Health & Safety
At this time of year we always get a number of illnesses occurring. At the moment there appears to be quite a few cases of “Gastro” type illnesses (Diarrhoea and/or vomiting symptoms) going around. Please remember that these type of illnesses are highly contagious and children cannot return to school until there has not been any symptoms for at least 24 hours.
Sorry Day
Sorry Day is commemorated each year on 26th May, since 1998.
Last Thursday, Lily, Toby and I attended the local Sorry Day ceremony in the Sherwood Arboretum. Many members from our local indigenous community and many other people from local community churches, schools and groups participated in this moving ceremony. The most moving part of the service, by Aunty Theresa, an Aboriginal elder, was her narrative about how she was part of the ‘Stolen Generations”.
The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998 – one year after the tabling of the report Bringing them Home, May 1997. The report was the result of an inquiry by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission into the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.
The public and political debate about the removal of children has been marked by intense political activity since the mid-to-late 1980s. In 1992 Prime Minister Keating acknowledged that 'we took the children from their mothers' at a speech in Redfern. In 1994 legal action was commenced in the Supreme Court of New South Wales. These children who were removed came to be known as the Stolen Generations.
A huge range of community activities took place across Australia on Sorry Day in 1998, the first Sorry Day. Sorry Books, in which people could record their personal feelings, were presented to representatives of the Indigenous communities. Hundreds of thousands of signatures were received. People could also register an apology electronically. You can view the 24,763 apologies to Australia's indigenous people made at Apology Australia.
On Sunday 28th May 2000 more than 250,000 people participated in the Corroboree 2000 Bridge Walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge. This walk was in support of Indigenous Australians and was organised by the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (now known as Reconciliation Australia), a Federal Government initiative to promote greater understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The event highlighted the issue of a lack of an apology by the Commonwealth Government to the Stolen Generations.
Sorry Day is an annual event, with marches, speeches and presentations being held through the country.
As part of the commemoration this year, our school has been presented with a lovely book entitled: “Stolen Generations Education”. This will be put in our library.
Wellbeing
Dust off those Onsie’s! (Students, Staff & Parents)
This weekend is World Environment Day. To celebrate this event the Wellbeing committee are hoping that the Student Council will approve to support a “Wild Onsie Friday” on Friday 17 June. Next week is “Wild Onsie Week”, which is raise our awareness of Endangered Species and also to raise money to support programs to protect these animals. More information in the newsletter next week.
In the last week of this term we will be celebrating NAIDOC week involving members of our local Indigenous community. We will start the day with a whole school assembly and follow on with cultural activities during the day.
On our Whole School Assembly which will now be on Thursday 23rd June starting at 9.00am, we will be celebrating NAIDOC week, as it falls during the school holidays.
During this special Assembly we will be having Traditional aboriginal songs sung by students in 4B and our choir. We are in negotiations with local community members to secure a guest speaker who can present at our assembly. They will be speaking about the local area and the significant Aboriginal places which date back to pre-European arrival. All parents are welcome at attend.

Active School Travel
TACO TUESDAY!
(T ravel A ctively C oming-to-school O n)
Fete Competition
The school fete committee has generously donated some prizes to Active Travel, which is great news for all those students out there who are active on TACO Tuesday! Active travel can be any of the following:
- Walking to school
- Park and stride – parking the car in the designate “park and stride” zones and walking a short distance to school
- Riding your bike or scooter to school
- Carpooling – arriving at school by car with some of your friends
- Public transport
Being dropped off at the front gate does NOT qualify as “active travel”.
In weeks 1-6 of Term 3 (12th July – 16th August) you will have the opportunity to collect an entry each week when you have your active travel passport stamped at the designated stamping stations. All you need to do is fill out your entry form and put it into the entry box (locations to be confirmed). Entries must be received by 3pm 19th August to go in the draw.
So if you travel every week you have the opportunity to have six entries in the running for the prizes. So get active!!!!
There will be one (1) ride band per year level to be given away. If you’re lucky enough to win and have already purchased your ride band, don’t worry we will organise a refund for you.
To win the free toss at the lob-o-choc get together with your class and get as many of your class mates to enter as possible. It’s simple, the class with the most entries will win!
Did you know that the Graceville Bike Company proudly supports the GSS Active Travel Program? They are offering the following to the families of Graceville State School:
- 15% off all kids’ accessories (not including bikes)
- 5% off all kids’ bikes
If you have a few spare hours a month to help us run this fantastic program we are looking for volunteers to join our Active Travel Committee. Our next meeting will be on 28th July @ 10:45am in the Waratah Room. Please contact Jo Richards at sajrichards@iinet.net.au for more information.

Plans for the Chaplaincy Lapathon Fundraiser are well under way and some of the priority one aspects have been sorted, For example, the coffee van has been booked for the morning session so spectators and staff can find their caffeine fix on site. Tuesday June 21st, will see our oval transformed into a spectacle of excited students running, jogging or walking with friends as they participate in the Lapathon activity. The Lapathon is the major yearly fundraiser for chaplaincy at Graceville State School and raises vital funds enabling chaplaincy to maintain a consistent, fulltime presence in the school, caring for and supporting all students. Sponsorship forms will be going home to students in coming weeks and families wishing to support the chaplaincy service at Graceville State School can do so by sponsoring students, helping students find sponsors or by making a donation via the online donation link on the form and listed below. Please note that all students are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Lapathon activity regardless of sponsorship or donations.
https://donate.suqld.org.au/once-off/chaplaincy/?id=16925
Donations for chaplaincy can be made at any time and every cent donated is used to maintain a fulltime chaplaincy service at Graceville. Graceville State School is one of the few QLD state primary schools with fulltime chaplaincy. This allows the school increased flexibility in providing avenues of care and support to the students. The support chaplaincy receives from the Graceville school community is truly humbling. It is a great privilege to journey alongside families through their child’s primary education years and be part of their support network. I would also like to invite parents and care-givers who are available on Lapathon day to join us at school and be part of this fun event. The program for this event will be distributed in coming weeks, ensuring that parents know when their children are participating. Fingers crossed this year that we can have greater success dodging wet weather than we did in 2015.
Trivia night plans are in full swing and we are heading “Back to the 80’s” for what is always a fantastic night. The school P & C do an amazing job putting this event on each year and those who attend are in for a treat. I know some staff members are taking the trivia night very seriously. Well, at least the dressing up part. The mind boggles with expectation of just what tables will dress up as this year. See you there!
Well done to all our sporting teams as grand finals were played last Friday. I believe our students found Finals success in a number of sports, as well as improving skills and learning more about sportsmanship. Thank you to the teachers for their efforts in training and coaching their respective teams.
I had the pleasure of attending Fanfare with our music students on Tuesday and totally enjoyed the performances. Our ensembles have made great progress this year, working hard with our music teachers and instrumental teachers and the results were certainly on display this week. Great job everyone!
Have an awesome week!

READERS CUP COMPETITIONS
In the next couple of weeks, two separate teams of Year Five students will represent Graceville State School in two different Readers Cup Competitions.
On Monday 6th June, Ryleigh, Josh, Pragun and Sebastian will compete in the annual Readers Cup Competition organised by the Corinda Teacher Librarian Network. It will be held at Brookfield State School.
Then on Monday 13th June, Tara, Isla, Sophie, Eunsu and Vienna will compete in the annual regional Readers’ Cup organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia to be held at St John’s Anglican College, Forest Lake.
Students in both teams have read (and re-read!) the allocated five books in preparation for the competition and will be required to answer a number of questions about each book. They have all studied very hard and we wish them all the best! Good luck to all these students!
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2016
Hopefully everyone is enjoying reading their favourite books in the Premier’s Reading Challenge! This year in Queensland more than 800 schools and individual readers have registered for the challenge and are busily trying to read 15 to 20 books from 16 May until 26 September. If you are planning to participate please make sure that you have a reading record sheet (available from the Library) and are recording the titles that you have read.
More information can be found at this web address

SCHOOL BANKING
Our banking coordinator Julie is looking for a couple of volunteers on a Monday morning to give an hour of time after drop off. Please come by the hall kitchen to help out. The school is given a commission by the Commonwealth Bank for each deposit. It is actually a worthy activity for the school community financially, as well as helping our children understand savings, banking, etc. But again, it does rely on volunteers to help out.
CLASS REPS MEETING
Thank you to the class reps who attended the class reps meeting last Friday and the fete meeting on Tuesday night. Class reps who were unable to make Tuesday night please contact us as the fete team need to discuss the stall allocations and requirements for your stall at the fete.
TRIVIA NIGHT
The trivia night is now fully booked and promises to be a fantastic night. Great thanks to our Principal and some of the teaching staff who have volunteered to help with the bar on the evening. Thanks too Juanita Bennett and the people who have helped her get it all together. Look out for the 80s costumes on Oxley Rd Friday night.
BUILDING FUND
The P&C, like most other P&Cs, offers parents an opportunity to take part in a Tax Deductible Voluntary Contribution Scheme. If you wish to contribute to the P&C building work projects for the school, please contact the P&C Executive at the email below and we will send you the details. The building fund is going towards climate controlling the school, continuing to air condition the class rooms and the major project of fixing the ventilation of the hall.
NEXT MEETING
All members of our school community are welcome to our next meeting Wednesday 20 July at 7.30pm in the Waratah Room (which is beside the staff room in the main administration block).
Please feel free to contact the P&C executive via email: pandc@gracevilss.eq.edu.au
Fete
Saturday 27 August. Here we go again! (and we can’t wait!!!)
The number 1 news for this update is that is that Anne Canalese has put up her hand to be the co-convenor of this year’s fete. She will work with me this year to learn the role before officially taking the reins next year. We’re all (especially me!) very excited to have Anne come on board. HOORAY!!!
We have also had a number of other new parents join our little band of merry fete men and women, and we’re super excited to see these new faces taking on their respective roles and collectively ensuring the future of everyone’s favourite Graceville community event.
We know that many parents – especially in the junior school – are a little daunted at the prospect of taking on roles and are hesitant to volunteer. Don’t be afraid! The systems and procedures to run the fete are well documented and the key now is to ensure that there are enough people available to share the load. The good news is that most of the key roles on the Fete Committee are already allocated for 2016, but it would be wonderful to get expressions of interest from parents who want to help out this year with a view to taking over next year.
Donations, please!
There are many ways you can make an impact on the fete. Perhaps you run a local business and would like to become a sponsor. Others may want to contribute items for the popular auction on fete day (in the past we have given away holidays, bikes, beauty treatments, golf packages and more) or smaller items for raffle prizes. If you have any ideas at all, Steph our sponsorship coordinator would love to hear from you. ( gss.fete.sponsorship@gmail.com )
For more information, keep an eye out for our Fete Newsletters. The most recent one is attached.
Thanks everyone,
Kathy Whitefield

Tuckshop News
The secret is out!!! The Tuckshop makes FANTASIC sandwiches, subs and wraps. We had a huge number of orders for them on Friday. A huge thank you to Lyn Griffiths who toiled through the endless pile of sandwich, subs and wrap orders on Friday. It was a mammoth task. A cup of tea was well in order at the end of it.
The rest of the week was like this:
Monday, 23/5 |
28 orders |
Tuesday, 24/5 |
29 orders |
Wednesday, 25/5 |
45 orders |
Thursday, 26/5 |
55 orders |
Friday, 27/5 |
152 orders |
There were a few manual orders but these were mainly due to operator errors rather than not using School24. Main trouble shooting answers are:
- Make sure you hit the submit button at the end of your order
- Make sure you get the confirmatory email.
- When you get the confirmatory email, check the delivery date is correct (this is different to the order date), and
- Make sure you have enough money in the account to cover the full cost of the order.
Volunteers for week commencing Monday, 6 June are:
Monday 6/6 |
Jennifer Loh |
Tuesday 7/6 |
Michael Willimott and Elise Allison |
Wednesday 8/6 |
Alison O’Keefe and Jewl Velasquez-Holmes |
Thursday 9/6 |
Fiona Fryer and Michelle Kimber-Fanning |
Friday 10/6 |
Yasmin NcNally, Liz Fourie, Shona Luke and LiLi |
If you see them, remember to say thanks.
As always, if you need to discuss anything relating to the Tuckshop drop us a line at tuckshop.gss@gmail.com or drop into see us. Make sure you come to the door as we keep the shutter down now to keep the warm air in.
See you at the tuckshop.

School Plus
This week the children of Graceville and Christ the King enjoyed participating in a massive variety of fun and exciting activities both inside and out, outside including soccer on the oval, playing on the Adventure Playground and learning how to hula with a hula hoop. Inside we had ample amounts of fun with paddle pop stick creations, colouring in our favourite movie characters, watching silly Mr. Bean and building houses made from playing cards! As always, we always welcome any suggestions that the children or parents may have for our programs! Just let one of our friendly staff know or pop your suggestions in our blue suggestions box on the front desk at the service.
We wish to remind the children and parents to pack a jumper in their school bag as the afternoons are becoming rapidly shorter, darker and much cooler and it is essential to keep warm in the cooler months to help try and prevent any illnesses. As we are quite a large service, it is vital to label clearly all items of clothing or equipment with your child’s name. Over the last few months we have acquired an ever growing pile of school jumpers, hats, water bottles and other bits and bobs without any names on them, making it difficult to find their owner.
Vacation Care is upon us! Now is the best time to start getting your bookings in so you can receive the early bird discount. We have two fantastic weeks planned and we are extremely excited, we have lots of fun activities and games planned. In vacation care we’re learning how to draw our very own cartoons, a day full of magic and Quidditch on our Harry Potter day, we will also be bouncing till our hearts are content with our very own Inflatable Day! During our second week, we have a brilliant excursion to The Workshop Rail Museum in Ipswich! We also have a science fair where we’ll have fun creating and hypothesising with experiments as we learn about the world of science. To end our wonderful vacation care, we’ll be seeing the return of our awesome School of Rock Day; spike up your hair, tune your guitar and get ready to rock out as we create our own instruments, play some music and even rock out on Guitar Hero! For more information, come in and ask our friendly staff for a program outlining the activities for each day.
Have a wonderfully exciting week!
