4 March 2016

From the Principal

Zoe Smith

Hello,

It is hard to believe there are only three school weeks to go until the Easter holidays!

In the past week we held two Parent Information Sessions on Curiosity and Powerful Learning. It was lovely that 90 people were able to attend. The feedback received so far has been excellent with participants supportive of the direction the school is taking over the next 3-5 years. Many parents who were not able to attend have asked if we can provide a copy of the presentation to them. Unfortunately we are unable to do so. The majority of the slides and videos used in the presentation were provided to us for the sole purpose of a Parent Information Sessions where we have control of the intellectual property. We do not want to end up in a situation where we provide a presentation to families in good faith and it ends up on social media. We are aware many of our families are active on various forms of social media and cannot risk breaching the rights of our engagement in the project. We are however feeding information back to the directors of the program with the idea it may be useful to create a presentation which can be distributed to all schools for this purpose.

As you are aware the Voluntary Contribution is directly linked to our Curiosity and Powerful learning work. I would like to thank the parents who have contributed to the Voluntary Contribution so far this year. We are now at a total of $13,000 which is equivalent to around one third of families supporting the Voluntary Contribution Scheme. We are very grateful for the support these families are showing towards our schools future focus. We are hoping more families will contribute as our goal for 2016 was $20,000. You are welcome to pay the Voluntary Contribution at any point in the school year. You are welcome to pay in part or in instalments. Please consider helping us begin our Curiosity and Powerful learning journey with a strong start.

Our Whole School Assembly was changed to Tuesday this week due to an incursion which required the hall on Thursday afternoon. Each fortnight at our Whole School Assemblies we are working to promote the wonderful things that are happening in our classrooms and in the playground. Our focus is usually on an aspect of Curiosity, Inquiry or our second main theme for the year which is wellbeing. This week we highlighted two year levels which are off to a great start with Inquiry learning. The Year 2 classes are focused on Inquiry through science and have the children working towards designing and creating a new lunch box for me! The teachers created a wonderful video as a hook to engage children in learning. I have been swamped by Year 2 children with all sorts of wonderful ideas for the type of lunch box I should buy and more importantly why! The knowledge they are building on different types of materials to make their lunch box is astounding! Our second Year level to share was Year 5 who are focusing their Inquiry on History. The teachers planned and are using Inquiry learning techniques to engage children in learning. Two students shared not only what they have been learning but why they have been learning it and the reasons they are now loving learning in history! It is fantastic to hear early feedback which supports that our new focus is more engaging for both students and teachers.

Next week our teachers will engage in the second round of learning TRIADS. We are grateful to our parent helpers in reading who are hanging in there with us as we aim to improve and get consistency in ensuring clear learning intent and success criteria in Active Comprehension. We understand the TRIADS cause a level of disruption to the class however feedback from the teachers is that the process is valuable as they are learning a lot from each other by watching each other work and providing feedback to each other on what they see and hear. Our teachers are brave and committed to creating positive change in the school so please keep supporting and encouraging them.

A reminder to all Year 2 and 4 parents that a Parent Information Session for 2017 Enhancement Classes is being held next Friday at 8am in the hall. Expression of Interest Forms will then be available at the office. All Expression of Interest Forms need to be returned to the school by Thursday 24 March for your child to be considered for a place in a program for 2017.

Finally, you will have received a letter with details about this terms Parent Teacher Interview process. After collating and reviewing both parent and teacher feedback on Parent Teacher Interviews last year, we have come up with what we believe to be a happy medium. We will give the new process a go in Term 1 and see how it can be improved upon for Term 3.

I hope you have a great week,

Mathletics for 2016

We will shortly commence the Mathletics program for this year. It is an online Mathematics program that is individually based and one that students can access at home as well as at school for all students in year 1 to year 6. This access to Mathletics is considerably cheaper than private family subscriptions. The cost for Mathletics is $12 per student for the year, please return your form as soon as possible now. Your class teacher can inform you more fully about Mathletics and how your class will be using the program this year. Each student will then receive their own personal log on and password to access the program for both at school and at home. It is a high quality program that offers valuable practice of mathematics and the possibility of differentiation to meet individual student's needs, abilities and progress.

Spotlight on Learning in Prep this week

Our Prep classes enjoyed their first incursion for the year by having Ocean Life visit the school with real life examples of animals from the ocean to enhance their learning in their Science unit about living things this term. Prep S students in the photos below show some of the hands on experiences they participated in.

Each week in the newsletter I will be putting in more information to support all members of our community and to raise the awareness of the importance of Wellbeing for all of us.

School Arrival time – 8.40am

Just a reminder to parents that the school day commences at 8.40 am. The music that plays at that time is the signal to students to get themselves to the classroom, get themselves ready and come into the room. The actual lessons start at 8.45am. Particularly in the lower school, most classes will be doing Reading groups at 8.45. This is one of main focus areas for our school so all students must be present by 8.45 in order to get the best start possible for the day and so that the teachers can start teaching the whole class at the one time. It is very distracting for teachers and students when students arrive late. It also means that often teachers have to repeat the start to this lesson, which doesn't make effective use of the valuable time that they have. Please try to get your children at school well and truly by 8.40am so that you give them the best possible chance to start the day off properly.

NAPLAN testing

On Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is commonly known.

Skills that will be tested include: reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

These tests are done here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.

It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia.

NAPLAN cannot be studied for and students are not expected to do so. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that it is just a routine part of their school program, and to urge them to do the best they can on the day.

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN testing. Please ensure that if you have a child in Years 3 or 5 that they are in attendance during that week in May. Please avoid booking holidays or appointments during those days. If you can't avoid those days eg. specialist appointment, please try to make it in the afternoon. All testing will be completed by 12.45 on those days.

Later in the year we will send you an individual student NAPLAN report that you can use to view and monitor how your child is progressing.

More information is available on the NAP website (http://www.nap.edu.au/).

If you have any concerns, please contact the class teacher or myself.

GRACEVILLE STATE SCHOOL READERS' CUP COMPETITION 2016

This term Year 5 & 6 students will participate in the annual GSS READERS CUP. Teams will compete against each other in the Readers Cup competition on THURSDAY 24 MARCH at 9.00 am in the HALL.

Readers' Cup is a competition that promotes the reading of books and rewards students who do well at reading. Just as good sports people receive rewards, then good readers will receive accolades and prizes for competing at reading.

Teams have already been formed and students are currently reading the FIVE selected stories (Red Dog; Bridge to Terabithia; Give Peas a Chance; Think Big; Our Granny). Points are scored on the day by answering rounds of questions on each book as well as answering rounds of general knowledge questions on reading and books.

Families are asked to encourage their children to read the required story books and actively support their team!

Active School Travel

TACO TUESDAY!

(Travel Actively Coming-to-school On)

The hot weather has seen an increase in the number of vehicles at the "pick up zone" in the afternoon as people remain in their vehicles to stay cool. Please be aware of your obligations when using the pick up zone to prevent congestion around the school. Please also remember that it is NOT ACCEPTABLE at ANY TIME to park on or over a YELLOW LINE. This has been an ongoing problem around the school as drivers choose to do the wrong thing. Be aware that the parking inspectors do regular visits to the school……if you're doing the wrong thing then you can expect to pay a fine!

Yellow lines marked on the roads means that you are NOT permitted to park there. These parking restrictions exist for a number of reasons. There may be a visual restriction that requires an area to be clear of parked cars so that others can drive through. It might be that a road design cannot cater for the space that a parked car takes up. It might be that the location is too close to an intersection and to park a car will cause a danger to other road users. You may even be restricting access of vehicles on a slip lane forcing them out into the path of traffic when they try and merge. Main Roads personnel and Council officers are not in the habit of painting a yellow line unless there is a specific reason to warrant it. If there's one there, the solution is to not park there.

The law is clear. A driver must not stop at the side of a road (or marked with a continuous yellow edge line. An edge line means, a line marked along the road at or near the far left or the far right hand side of the road. There does not need to be a sign accompanying the yellow line. The fact that there is a yellow line there creates the offence.

The fact remains, unless there is an extraordinary emergency occurring at the time, excuses for parking there won't stand up to scrutiny. You can expect to receive a penalty notice, each and every time your vehicle is located at one of these spots.

Benefits of walking

Walking with your children is a great way to spend quality time together. Walking allows children to develop a healthy exercise habit, independence and a sense of community. You can help to teach your child how to walk safely by:

  • Being a model of safe behaviour for your kids
  • Talking with them about your actions and decisions as you walk. Ask your children:
    - Is this a safe place to cross?
    - Is there somewhere better to cross, like a pedestrian crossing?
    - Can we be seen by drivers?
    - Where is the best place to walk?
    - Which road should we take to get home?
  • Exploring with them, so your children experience different situations and learn about the area they live in
  • Giving them more responsibility as they demonstrate more road sense. Get them to lead the way, they might take you places you've never been before.
  • Making sure your children know people who live along the route or places they can go to if they feel threatened by strangers or bullies. For information visit Neighbourhood Watch or the Queensland Police Service website.
  • Encouraging you kids to walk with friends as they become more independent.

Frequently asked questions:

Where can I get a new passport?: All prep students should have received a passport in their KIT folders. If you have a passport from last year, please keep using this passport until all spaces are stamped. If you need a new passport, please see our student helpers at the stamping station on Tuesday mornings.

Where to get passports stamped?: The stamping station can be found outside the school hall (opposite the tuckshop) on Tuesday mornings from approximately 8:15am

If you have a few spare hours a month to help us run this fantastic program we are looking for volunteers to join our Active Travel Committee. Please contact Jo Richards at sajrichards@iinet.net.au for more information.

School Banking

Calling for volunteers – we need your help!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator (and support volunteers) to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

Currently, School Banking day is Wednesday.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please fill in the tear off section from the attached form.

P&C Annual General Meeting

Annual General Meeting - 23rd March - 7.30pm

Each year as part of our Constitution the P&C is required to conduct an Annual General Meeting. This is when the current P&C Executive and its membership are dissolved and a new Executive elected. The Executive positions available are President, 2 x Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, and Secretary.

All current members are required to renew their memberships by completing a new membership registration form for 2016 (available soon). More information will be provided in the following weeks so you can find out how you can play a part in supporting the P&C.

As our regular cohort of supporting members are graduating through the school years, we need new members to continue the good work of the P&C. Without your help the P&C cannot survive. Come along to the AGM and get involved in your school. All you need is a willingness to help and a desire to jump in and have a go. We welcome you!

Volunteers

GSS has always prided itself on the support it receives from its parent body and the wider community. Many programs and activities that benefit our children would not be possible without the wonderful volunteer groups within GSS. So… decide which is for you and if at all possible join in with the many and varied areas within the school that need your help. Examples are: Tuckshop, Uniform Shop, Contact Club, reading groups, Spellathon, Trivia Night, Parents Party, Sports Day, Active School Travel, School Banking and the Fete. Please contact the P&C for more information.

The School Directory

The School Directory is currently being compiled. A template of this year's School Directory will be emailed to the Class Reps, who will then ask the parents or carers of class members to make changes to their details as appropriate.

The School Directory is a useful document for parents and carers to contact other class members for social catch-ups or playdates or coffee mornings. If you do not wish to be part of the directory, this is also an option. Your child's name will just appear as a first name and surname initial with no details. Please see example below for a name with details and one without:

First Name - Surname - Phone no.
Lucy Ball 0800 456 788
Desi A -

We don't publish email addresses in the school directory however we do use them for our class rep network so please fill in your full details on the class information sheet (available at class information sessions)

For further information regarding the P&C or its activities, please contact the P&C at P&C email : or visit the school website at GracevilleSS
