26 February 2016
From the Principal
Zoe Smith
Hello,
We are now officially half way through the term! This is a short term with only 9 weeks.
Firstly, I would like to say thank you to the families who have supported the Voluntary Contribution Scheme. One quarter of families have made a contribution to date. Last year, just under a third of families paid the contribution. We would greatly appreciate your consideration in making a Voluntary Contribution to help support teaching and learning at Graceville!
On Wednesday night we held the first Parent Information session for Curiosity and Powerful Learning. A group of 30 – 40 curious parents joined us to learn more about our schools journey! I would like to thank Mrs Belinda Martin for the huge effort she put into planning the session. We will be repeating the session at 8.45am on March 1. Please consider coming along. We would love to see you there!
This week our teachers engaged in a professional learning activity called TRIADS. In TRIADS, groups of teachers observe each other teach and provide feedback on what they hear and see happening in each other's lessons. An important part of the process is talking to students to find out how well they understand what they are learning. As you can imagine, it was nerve racking at first, however our teachers quickly overcame their nerves, seeing the value in the process as they learned more about themselves and each other as professionals. Ultimately, our students’ best interests will be met as our teachers learn from each other and grow professionally together. I hope you can appreciate how lucky we are to have such open minded and committed teachers who are willing to try new things to improve student learning for the children of Graceville! Thank you teachers!
As part of our Whole School Assembly last week we handed out our first ever Curiouser and Curiouser and Random Act of Kindness Awards. We received lovely feedback from students and families about the positive impact the focus of the new awards is having in the school. I would like to offer my congratulations to the following students for receiving the awards.
Random Acts of Kindness:
Kate O Prep
Ollie S Year 1
Connah N Year 2
Samuel C Year 3
Eadie N Year4
Jackson B Year 5
Jack W Year 6
Curiouser and Curiouser:
Dorothea Prep
Alex F Year 1
Jackson B Year 2
Gemma U Year 3
Amy L Year 4
Alice B Year 5
Sarah O Year 6
Please note our Whole School Assembly next week will be held on Tuesday afternoon from 2.15pm. The school is hosting a Problem Solving workshop which requires full use of the hall from Wednesday to Friday.
Finally, I would like to draw the attention of all Year 2 and 4 parents interested in learning more about the Enhancement Classes, to the date of the upcoming Parent Information Session on Friday 11 March at 8am. Mrs Sandy Davey, Senior Enhancement class teacher, will talk parents through how the Enhancement classes operate and the process to Express an Interest in a place for the classes for 2017. A letter with further details will go home to all Year 2 and 4 parents this week.
Have a great week.

Mathletics for 2016
We will shortly commence the Mathletics program for this year. It is an online Mathematics program that is individually based and one that students can access at home as well as at school for all students in year 1 to year 6. This access to Mathletics is considerably cheaper than private family subscriptions. The cost for Mathletics is $12 per student for the year, please return your form as soon as possible now. Your class teacher can inform you more fully about Mathletics and how your class will be using the program this year. Each student will then receive their own personal log on and password to access the program for both at school and at home. It is a high quality program that offers valuable practice of mathematics and the possibility of differentiation to meet individual student’s needs, abilities and progress.
Junior Assemblies
Parents and care givers are all invited to join us for Junior Assemblies on every second Tuesday afternoon from 2.15 in the hall.
Below is the calendar for term 1 assemblies.

Wellbeing
This year one of our Improvement agenda items is Wellbeing. This relates to the wellbeing of all members of our school community – students, staff and parents and community members.
As you may be aware we have introduced a number of initiates to support Wellbeing in the school. One of these is the “Random Act of Kindness” award on the Whole School Assembly each fortnight. Each year level nominates a student for this award. It has been great to hear some very positive feedback from students, staff and parents about this new initiative. Adding in the value of showing ‘kindness’ has had quite a huge effect on the school.
As part of our focus on Wellbeing in the school, is for us to develop our “Learning and Wellbeing Framework”. This document will be shared with the P & C and community once it has been developed. The process that we will follow, has already commenced. Staff have become familiar with the various parts of the framework and we are starting to work through these sections. The process that we are following is to assess the areas of need in the school and develop and implement positive changes. For us, the Pathways to Peace program in the school does fit nicely into and complements the Wellbeing Framework.
The first of 4 areas where we are focussing is the “Learning Environment”. Here is sample of what we have been working through:
- Wellbeing is a high priority in the school community – awareness raising
- Continuing to identify and address the needs of all students
- Involving students in decision-making – Eg. Student council. We have a Wellbeing committee which will be heavily involved in activities as well having a representative on our School Wellbeing committee
- Consistency in rules, consequences & rewards – continue promoting “Pathways to peace”
- Promoting wellbeing in the broader community Eg. Rotary award for Yr 6 students, Student Council, Links to Milpera SHS, Anzac/Remembrance Day, Grandparents concert & other community music events
- Buddy program
- Supporting Staff Wellbeing & providing Professional Development
- Celebrating diversity through celebrations and events – Yearly calendar of events of celebrations and special days to acknowledge. Some will be celebrated by school events Eg Continuing – Active School Travel, Anzac/Remembrance day, Bookweek, Daniel Morcombe Day, etc. Others will be new Eg. World Environment Day, Naidoc Week, Universal Children’s Day etc.
Our first Special Event is the National Day of Action (18 March) – (Bullying & Violence). The Student Council has already organised some great ways to recognise this day. We will also be having a special Assembly celebration on the 17th March. For more information about the National Day of Action please refer to the website: http://www.bullyingnoway.gov.au/national-day/
The second event is Harmony Day – Monday 21 March. This Special Day is important to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity. We will be encouraging students and teachers to celebrate the cultural backgrounds of their students. Each teacher may choose to do this a variety of ways. During our Whole School Assembly on 17 March we will also be celebrating. More details in next week’s newsletter. : http://www.harmony.gov.au/
Each week in the newsletter I will be putting in more information to support all members of our community and to raise the awareness of the importance of Wellbeing for all of us.

It is wonderful to be back on deck after surgery and to be able to breathe freely. It’s a luxury I had forgotten. Thank you for the friendly greetings making my return to school even more welcoming.
With little to report from the last couple of weeks, I thought it may be a good time to share a little more about one of the programs which operates at school. Friends For Life and Fun Friends are resilience and positive life-coping skills development programs which are available for students identified by staff or families as benefiting from such training.

Active School Travel
TACO TUESDAY!
(Travel Actively Coming-to-school On)
It was fantastic to see so many students actively travelling to school this week on TACO Tuesday. Remember, you can travel actively on any day of the week. There are many ways to be active - Put on your sneakers and walk, or get on your bike or scooter (and remember to wear your helmets).
Here are just a few benefits of walking (riding or scooting) to school every day
- Reduced traffic around the school
- Walking is one of the best exercises to build strong, healthy bones
- Helps reduce anxiety
- It is a great way to have a chat along the way
- Improves sleep quality
- Improves cognitive performance at school
If you’re unable to walk or ride, consider parking the car at one of the designated “park and stride” locations and walk the remaining distance on foot. Alternatively, car pool with some friends and help reduce congestion around the school.
Children's crossings
We are very lucky to have our Crossing Supervisors to keep us safe while crossing the road before and after school.
Children's crossings operate only when the red 'children crossing' flags are displayed. They are designed to help children cross the road safely near schools. To use a children's crossing:
- Wait on one side of the road for the supervisor to walk out on to the crossing with a red stop sign.
- Cross once the traffic has stopped at the white stop lines on the road and the crossing supervisor has blown a whistle.
Two minute zones / parking
Please be conscious of the parking regulations, especially the 2-minute zones on both sides of our school. These zones only allow you to ‘sit’ in the queue for a maximum of 2 minutes. You are not permitted to get out of your car or leave your car. If you need to get out of your car please find a suitable parking spot away from the 2-minute zones. If you are a Prep parent then you are required to go to the classroom to pick up your child so you should not be using the 2-minute zones.
If your child/ren is not there ready you are obliged to leave, do the block & re-join the queue. You must be conscious of not queuing and blocking off traffic. On Acacia Avenue it is illegal to queue in the right hand lane & block the road for other motorists. I realise this only allows for a small number of cars, but it is a road rule for the safety of all motorists.
As a parent, you are the most influential person in your child's life. They form their behavior based on the activities that you encourage them to participate in, and these behaviors are likely to extend well into their adult years.
If you have a few spare hours a month to help us run this fantastic program we are looking for volunteers to join our Active Travel Committee. Please contact Jo Richards at sajrichards@iinet.net.au for more information. Alternatively please join us for our next meeting at the Waratah room 3rd March 2016 @ 10:45am.

P&C Annual General Meeting
Annual General Meeting - 23rd March - 7.30pm
Each year as part of our constitution the P&C is required to conduct an Annual General Meeting. This is when the current P&C Executive and its membership are dissolved and a new Executive elected.
All current members are required to renew their memberships by completing a new membership registration form for 2016. These forms will be available next week or you can pick one up and our next general meeting on the 24th Feb.
More information will be provided in the following weeks for you about how you can possibly play a part in supporting the P&C.
Volunteers
GSS has always prided itself on the support it receives from its parent body and the wider community. Many programs and activities that benefit our children would not be possible without the wonderful volunteer groups within GSS. So… decide which is for you and if at all possible join in with the many and varied areas within the school that need your help. Examples are: tuckshop, uniform shop, Contact Club, reading groups, Spellathon, Trivia Night, Parents Party, Sports Day, Active School Travel, School Banking and the Fete.
Of course the P&C is always looking for new members. If you are interested in being a part of this great school, please contact the P&C or speak to your classroom teacher to see how you can help. It’s our children who will benefit!!!!!
The School Directory
The School Directory is currently being compiled. A template of this year’s School Directory will be emailed to the Class Reps, who will then ask the parents or carers of class members to make changes to their details as appropriate.
The School Directory is a useful document for parents and carers to contact other class members for social catch-ups or playdates or coffee mornings. If you do not wish to be part of the directory, this is also an option. Your child’s name will just appear as a first name and surname initial with no details. Please see example below for a name with details and one without:
First Name - Surname - Phone no.
Lucy Ball 0800 456 788
Desi A -
We don’t publish email addresses in the school directory however we do use them for our class rep network so please fill in your full details on the class information sheet (available at class information sessions)
Contact Club
The next Contact Club will meet on Wednesday the 2nd of March straight after the morning school drop-off in the library. Please come along for a friendly morning of chat and essential book covering; it’s easy to do with great quality contact. Tea and coffee is supplied, bring a nut-free snack along to share if you like.
The Contact Club covers many new books and learning resources used by all our children. The quicker we cover the books, the quicker the students and teachers can use the new resources. Our children all benefit! You will feel great once you see how your work really has helped.
If you are interested come along or, for more information, please email Amanda at thecarps.home@gmail.com
For further information regarding the P&C or its activities, please contact the P&C at email: pandc@gracevilss.eq.edu.au or visit the school website at

Spellathon
It’s SPELLATHON time! Spellathon is a fundraising event designed to be both a fun and an educational activity for our children.
This week the SPELLATHON 2016 word lists and sponsorship forms have been given to the children to take home. If your family has not received the Spellathon information please check the bottom of their school bags. The documents for each year level are also attached.
Spellathon is a literacy based way for our children to help fundraise for our school. This year the funds raised will go towards refreshing the school’s technology equipment (laptops and some desktops). Projects like these are of great benefit to all students in the school.
Please show your support by encouraging your child to help our school. Involve your families, friends and neighbours by asking them to become sponsors. The sponsorship your child receives will be a real incentive for them to learn their words.
There will be lots of fun prizes awarded. Prizes will be based on sponsorship collected and also every child who spells all their words correctly will be entered into a prize draw where they could win one of two fun prizes in each year level. As well as these individual prizes, there will be whole class prizes. Every child in the class that raises the most money in each year level will receive a small prize. No matter how small a contribution your child makes it will be helping to make the 2016 Spellathon a great success.
Important Spellathon Dates:
Tuesday 15 March: SPELLATHON Test Day
Monday 18 April: Return of sponsorship forms and money

Awesome Fun for Everyone
New families and children are loving our new kitchen. The children are looking forward to using our new addition to the centre for cooking experiences. This week we worked as a team to paint a number of the windows in our room. We plan on continuing this with the children to cover more of the windows at the service to add to our bright and colourful environment.
We have also introduced our new Observation Deck to the children. We have two dinosaur eggs hatching in the water as we speak! We also have Sniffle pots filled with a variety of different scents to discover including cinnamon, curry powder, lavender, flowers and sandalwood. The Observation Deck is located just inside the front door of the service and the children are eager to engage with all of the exciting new things available to them.
Our seniors are taking on some new responsibilities next week. Beginning next week, children in years 3-6 will be caring for, feeding and monitoring the process of their new centre pets, Aqua Dragons. Caring for their new pets will give them an opportunity to exercise their growing responsibility as seniors.
Ginger Sports has begun for the term at OSHC. The program runs at the service, every Friday until 5th of February. It is not too late to book for the remaining weeks. Their skills are already improving and we can’t wait to have a whole team of soccer superstars at the centre in 7 weeks time.
We are excited to announce that in the next few weeks at OSHC we will be exploring Madagascar! We have lots of exciting things planned and lots of new things to learn about Madagascar. We are going to learn about how lemurs are losing their habitats because of deforestation, how different tribes have many different languages, exploring Madagascan cuisine and making clay animals from the movie Madagascar.
